Manolis Baboussis, biography

Manolis Baboussis (b. 1950, Athens) studied architecture at the University of Florence (1968–1975), where he worked under the mentorship of Adolfo Natalini, a founding member of the Superstudio collective. In 1976, he participated in the restoration programme at UNESCO’s International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome. His architectural practice includes projects for the Organisation of School Buildings S.A. (OSK).

Since 1973, Baboussis has developed an interdisciplinary artistic practice encompassing photography (including print and video projections), drawing, installation, and text-based work.

In 2003, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece (EMST) presented Manolis Baboussis: Works 1973–2003, his first major photography exhibition, a retrospective spanning three decades of artistic production.

His work critically engages with issues of environmental degradation, trauma and its persistence, the global virtual economy, and institutional systems, including those of the contemporary art world. Working across photography, drawing, poetry, and installation, he reflects on social and political structures as well as on conditions of visibility within contemporary culture.

In 1999, as a professor, Baboussis founded the Department of Photographic Studies at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA), where he also taught in the postgraduate programme, focusing on digital arts and the evolving status of photography within contemporary practice. In 2011, as Vice Rector and architect, he led the conception, design, and implementation of the transformation of the ASFA parking area into a garden, foregrounding a dialogue between landscape, ecology, and urban space. He resigned from his tenured professorship in 2013.

Between 1994 and 2017, Baboussis was a close friend and collaborator of Jannis Kounellis, contributing interpretative insights grounded in his visual engagement with Kounellis’s practice.

His work is included in numerous important public and private collections. He has also published numerous monographs, artist books, notebooks, and poetry collections with publishers including Exantas, Bastas, Plessas, Futura, Smilis, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), the Benaki Museum, CAMeC, and the Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center.

He lives and works in Athens and Kea Island, Greece.

O Μανώλης Μπαμπούσης (γεν.1950, Αθήνα) σπούδασε αρχιτεκτονική στο Πανεπιστήμιο Φλωρεντίας (1968 – 1975) με καθηγητή τον Α. Νatalini, ιδρυτικό μέλος του Superstudio, και συμμετείχε στο πρόγραμμα αναστηλώσεων του Διεθνούς Κέντρου Συντήρησης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της Unesco, (I.C.C.RΟΜ) στη Ρώμη. Ως αρχιτέκτονας έχει εργασθεί στον ΟΣΚ (Οργανισμός Σχολικών Κτιρίων). Από το 1973 χρησιμοποιεί στο έργο του εκτυπώσεις και βίντεο, προβολές φωτογραφιών, σχέδια και εγκαταστάσεις.

Το 2003, το Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (Ε.Μ.Σ.Τ) πραγματοποίησε την πρώτη έκθεση σύγχρονης φωτογραφίας με την αναδρομική έκθεση: Μανώλης Μπαμπούσης 1973-2003. Τα έργα του προσεγγίζουν κριτικά την καταστροφή του περιβάλλοντος, την κατάθλιψη των διαρκών τραυματισμών, την παγκοσμιοποιημένη άυλη οικονομία, τους θεσμούς ακόμα και της τέχνης. Με τη φωτογραφική εικόνα, τα σχέδια, τα ποιήματά και τις εγκαταστάσεις του, σχολιάζει την κοινωνική, πολιτική και την καλλιτεχνική πραγματικότητα, προτείνοντας συχνά την ουτοπία ως καθημερινή πραγματικότητα.

Το 1999, θεμελίωσε το Φωτογραφικό Εργαστήριο της ΑΣΚΤ ενώ δίδαξε και στο Μεταπτυχιακό Πρόγραμμα Σπουδών, Ψηφιακές Μορφές Τέχνης τις Διαδρομές της Φωτογραφίας στη Σύγχρονη Τέχνη. Το 2011, ως αντιπρύτανης και αρχιτέκτονας, μελέτησε, σχεδίασε, οργάνωσε και επέβλεψε τη μετατροπή του πάρκινγκ της ΑΣΚΤ σε κήπο. Το 2013, παραιτήθηκε από τη θέση του τακτικού καθηγητή της ΑΣΚΤ.

Από το 1994 – 2017, ήταν σταθερά́ δίπλα στον Γιάννη Κουνέλλη, στενό φίλο και συνεργάτη του, συμβάλλοντας με την προσωπική́ του ματιά στην ερμηνεία του έργου του.
